Shannon & Josh – May 2013

Wednesday, May 29th, 2013

Shannon in her wedding gown stands with her husband Josh, by a red corvette in Confederation Park.

I photographed Shannon & Josh last summer in Toronto for their engagement photos by the lake. I knew from that experience that Shannon and Josh are incredibly easy-going people and a joy to work with. Their wedding this month was exactly the same experience.

Shannon put a lot of love and work into every detail of her wedding, which made me think that her easy-going attitude may shift on her wedding day, but to my amazement, Shannon was incredibly calm and in control. Her planning was so effective that for most of the day, things were ahead of schedule.

The flower girl and groomsman look on as Shannon's bridesmaids help her get dressed. Shannon's bridesmaids help her with the finishing touches of her wedding outfit.

I’m surprised that I’ve never been asked to photograph a “First Look” before. There is a trend for the bride and groom to see each other briefly before the ceremony to capture their reaction to how each other look and to calm their nerves before saying their vows. Shannon and Josh opted to not see each other before the ceremony, but Shannon set up a first look with her father.

We were so far ahead of schedule that even after some formals in the hotel lobby, we were waiting around for the limo bus to pick us up.

The weather was a little chilly, but beautiful. The sun peaked out just enough to light their outdoor ceremony, at The Grand Olympia in Stoney Creek, perfectly.

After the ceremony, the wedding party piled into the limo bus and we headed to Confederation Park in Hamilton for photos.

We had a great afternoon hanging out by the water. Shannon and Josh’s wedding party were a lot of fun to work with and their flower girl and “ring security” were adorable and so easy to direct.

I met Patricia, Colin and their adorable daughter Maddie after they contacted me last year. They booked me to shoot engagement photos as well as their wedding, which took place at Three Bridges Banquet Hall in St. Jacobs last month.  I was really looking forward to Patricia & Colin’s wedding since I had known, from the meetings and their engagement session, that they are incredibly kind and enjoyable people to be around. Besides the cool breeze and the snow on the ground, it was a beautiful day.

I was wearing a jacket while we took photos outside and even I was freezing by the time we were finished. I was so impressed by how well Patricia braved the cold. She couldn’t feel her fingers by the time we were done, but we got some great shots, despite the fact that much of the grounds were covered in a foot or more of snow.

Then, we headed back inside for the reception, where guests were invited to sing a song with the word “love” to make the happy couple kiss.

Kim & Matt – February 2013 [Dominican Republic]

Kim & Matt leaning on a railing in front of the ocean at Cayo Levantado

Hola!

I recently returned from an 8-day trip to Samaná, Dominican Republic, where I photographed Toronto couple Kim & Matt’s beautiful wedding. We stayed at Cayo Levantado, a luxury, all-inclusive resort, located on its own island in Samaná Bay.

As you may recall, I made engagement photos of Kim & Matt last fall at Toronto’s Evergreen Brick Works, one of which became one of the most popular posts on my photography fan page on Facebook.

Having never photographed a destination wedding before, I was really excited for this experience. On top of that, I got the opportunity to jump on a plane in the dead of winter and then relax by the beach in 30ºC weather for a week. Pretty hard to turn down.

View of our plane at Pearson AirportIMG_2111

After landing at the tiny Samaná airport, we were whisked onto a coach bus and drove for about an hour through a very poverty-stricken landscape and arrived at Cayo Levantado’s mainland pier. The bus loaded onto a small passenger ferry and took a short boat trip over to what is known as Bacardi Island.

Kim & Matt's guests in the ocean at Cayo Levantado

The rooms are split up into 20-something villas, spread out all over the island. Our room was beautiful, spacious and had a floor-to-ceiling window/door that led to a balcony, overlooking the ocean. The strangest thing about the room was the gigantic window from the bedroom into the bathroom, which rendered the entire room privacy-less. The trade-off was that I could look out at the ocean, while brushing my teeth.

That night, Kim & Matt invited their guests to join them for welcome drinks in the Daiquiri Bar, where I met Matt’s twin brother, Andy. Over the course of the week, I had to look closely to figure out which brother was which.

Kim and Matt's guests cheers at the bar.

One of the first days of the trip, Kim & Matt took the guests of their wedding on a whale watching tour off the coast of Samaná. We saw a lot of jumping and one of the whales kept waving its fin at us.

Despite feeling incredibly sea sick by the end of it, it was an amazing experience.

Tuesday was Kim & Matt’s wedding day. It was a photographer’s dream to have such picturesque backgrounds to use for photos.

Matt and the boys cooled down with a Cerveza Presidente, Dominican’s national beer, before the ceremony. Meanwhile, Kim was finishing up her preparations.

Kim and Matt opted to not get married on the beach, which I agreed was a wise choice, considering the wind that comes off the ocean is very strong and there would have been sunbathing people in the background of all their ceremony photos. They cleared a section of the main dining area for the ceremony. It was a beautiful spot for a wedding.

After the ceremony, the staff brought out champaign for all of the guests for a toast by Kim’s brother.

Cayo Levantado was an incredible resort to use for photography locations. I had a lot of fun exploring and scouting and then eventually taking Kim and Matt to all the locations I had planned for us to use.

Before the week was over, Kim, Matt and I took a trip into Samaná to take some casual portraits of the newlyweds.

It was a wonderful week, a beautiful wedding and I had a lot of fun with Kim, Matt and their guests. Thanks to Kim and Matt for showing me a wonderful time in paradise. All the best to you both.

Asheley & Jason – August 2012 [Brampton]

Monday, September 10th, 2012

When I first met with Asheley & Jason, they told me that they wanted me to do my thing and had almost no direction whatsoever as to how I should capture their day. When couples give me their full confidence, I’m able to experiment with their photos and capture their wedding day in a style that I think represents their personalities and their relationship.

I was surprised that when I arrived at Asheley’s house, several hours before the ceremony, that she was already ready. The atmosphere was calm and peaceful – not what you would normally expect right before a wedding.

During the reception, the newlyweds were told they would be participating in a game that may involve removing some clothing. Moments later, Asheley’s brother took the mic and asked Asheley & Jason to sit back-to-back on two chairs and exchange one shoe with the other. Now bearing one of their own shoes and one of their spouse’s, they were asked questions such as “Who will be doing most of the cooking?” At that point, Asheley and Jason each had to raise one of the shoes in their hands, to represent either themselves or their significant other.

Christina & Robin – April 2012 [Grimsby]

Christina & Robin are good friends of my brother, Steve. When they found out that I’m a photographer, they asked Steve to introduce me to them. They soon asked me to photograph their wedding. In the few short meetings I had with the couple, it became evident why my brother had become such good friends with them.

The things Steve had told me about Christina & Robin were absolutely true: they are indeed two of the most genuine and easygoing people I’ve met. After a long and challenging final semester of university, Christina & Robin’s wedding, at Casablanca Winery Inn in Grimsby, ON, was a great way to finish it off.

I want to thank Bailey & Lee for being so patient since I’ve been so busy with my thesis that I haven’t had a chance to post the blog from their wedding yet. But behold – here it finally is.

Kristina & Yousif – September 2011 [Old Mill Inn]

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

Kristina & Yousif standing at the alter

Kristina & Yousif’s beautiful wedding took place at The Old Mill Inn & Spa in Toronto.

From the minute I arrived at The Old Mill, it became clear to me that it’s quite literally a wedding factory. Before I got to the front door, I had already passed two other brides. But despite the fact that 5 or 6 weddings were happening at the venue that day, it never felt crowded or impersonal. Pretty incredible.

Kristina's wedding dress hanging in the window

Kristina and her bridesmaids were busy getting ready in a room at the inn, as I wandered around the maze-like hallways of the historic Old Mill.

Just a few hours later, we headed to the chapel for a very short and sweet ceremony.

Kristina & Yousif's wedding ceremony

The Old Mill wedding chapel is very charming, but incredibly dark. This was one of the most challenging ceremonies I’ve photographed, since the available light was so limited. Though difficult, it created very dramatic images.

After the ceremony, I took the wedding party around the Old Mill’s gorgeous grounds for some fun photos.

The wedding party was a lot of fun to work with. Everybody was so friendly and weloming through the whole photo shoot.

Kristina & Yousif were very playful while I shot them. They were always joking around and laughing, which made them so easy to work with.

Nicole's wedding dress

I’m so thrilled that I got the opportunity to meet Nicole & Will. I would never have had the chance to meet such genuinely thoughtful & enjoyable people, if  they hadn’t asked me to photograph their wedding.

Will and groomsmen play poker.

Will is such an easy-going, happy guy; probably one of the most animated grooms I’ve worked with. From his personality, you’d never know that Will is a soldier, who was badly wounded last year by a buried bomb while on duty in Afghanistan.

Will throws in his poker chips. Will with his Cutlass

One thing that was immediately evident to me about Will is that he doesn’t take anything for granted. It’s obvious that Will is completely devoted to his family, friends, his beautiful blue Oldsmobile Cutlass and, of course, Nicole.

Nicole having her dress tied up by her bridesmaids/sisters

Nicole is a bride who knows what she wants. This is not to say that Nicole was a “bride-zilla” by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, there were a few hiccups in the schedule over the course of the day, and Nicole didn’t seem the least bit upset or stressed about it.

Back of Nicole's wedding dressNicole crying after putting on her wedding dress

By “she wasn’t upset” I didn’t mean that she didn’t cry. The photo above was the first time (of many) that I captured Nicole crying. She had just finished having her dress tied up and I had her mom & bridesmaids stand behind me while I took a couple photos. I couldn’t see behind me, but I can only assume that tears were flowing behind me to inspire this reaction from Nicole.

Nicole by the windowNicole's bridal bouquetNicole's shoes peeking out

Nicole asked me to take a photo of her sentimental tattoo. I love how it turned out.

The limo ride to the ceremony was, for the most part, a dance party. But there was a moment of calm just before we arrived.

Will waiting for Nicole at the Ceremony

As per tradition, the bride arrived fashionably late. Will waited patiently at the alter, for his bride to show up.

You May Kiss the Bride

Will wasn’t about to waste this kiss. Soon after, we jumped back in the limo to go take some photos, where the wedding party enjoyed a bottle of champagne.

I rarely make solid plans for wedding party photos. Winging it seems to always work out for the best. And this time, it definitely worked out.

This group was loads of fun to photograph. Everybody was super co-operative, but felt relaxed enough to joke around, which made for some great moments for me to capture.

Nicole & Will by an old shed

Nicole could barely keep her eyes off her husband. The way these two look at each other is like nothing else.

Nicole & Will in the limo

During the dance-party limo ride back to the reception, it was as if Nicole & Will were completely alone, just enjoying each others’ company.

The reception was beautiful, the food was delicious and their cake was amazing. It had slanted tiers and the bride atop drags her groom up the slant.

After seeing these photos, Nicole emailed me to say:

Will and I absolutly LOVE the pictures!! They look amazing and only make us even more excited to see the rest of them!
[...]
You were a great pleasure to work with! Very professional and fun and I have reccommended you to every one I know getting married :)

Spending the day with these two taught me a lot about how important it is to treasure the people you have around you. Nicole & Will are amazing people and like I said, I’m so happy to have met such a heroic couple.

Congrats, guys!

Wedding Rings

Mere & Nate’s wedding day was gorgeous. It was warm & sunny, but not so humid that it was unbearable. Perfect for an outdoor, countryside wedding.

Mere & her bridesmaids

I spent the early afternoon with Mere & her bridesmaids, finding lots of shade among the trees. Mere might be one of the most laid-back brides I’ve worked with and her big day followed suit from beginning to end.

Isla the Flower Girl

Baby Isla was all dressed up for her big moment as the flower girl.

The Back of Mere's DressExchanging RingsThe Kiss

Their ceremony was short and sweet. Mere looked absolutely stunning.

The Wedding Party

Due to the heat, Nate made the executive decision to forgo jackets during photos, which worked just fine for me, since I wanted to capture a very casual, relaxed feeling for these photos.

Cornfield KissMere sitting in the grassUnder the Barn

There was no shortage of locations for photos, but my absolute favourite was under an old barn across the street from where the ceremony was held. At first glance, it looked like a pile of garbage, but upon further inspection, it turned out to be a beautiful pile of garbage that was the perfect backdrop for a photo.

On the Back Porch

Mere & Nate were a joy to work with. They were even patient enough to stay in the same pose for several minutes while I searched for the perfect shot.

Cornfield Love

The happy couple even got a quiet moment alone while the sun began to set, moments before we headed back across the street for dinner.

The bridesmaids took a musical approach to their speech. It was both funny and endearing and received a well-deserved standing ovation.
