The Walper Hotel | Wedding Venue Planning Guide 2026

Getting Married at The Walper Hotel
If you’re dreaming of a wedding where everything (getting ready, portraits, ceremony, and reception) happens in one stylish, historic space, The Walper Hotel in downtown Kitchener is a perfect fit. It’s a venue with soul: full of charm, a rich history, thoughtful details, and just the right amount of modern flair.
Without question, the Walper Hotel is one of the Top Wedding Venues in Kitchener-Waterloo. It has great photo locations both inside and outside, within a short downtown walk. This is the kind of place where you can throw a seamless, full-weekend celebration, and never step outside if you don’t want to.
This guide includes wedding pricing, capacity limits, helpful tips, and examples of real weddings at The Walper Hotel.

Why Couples Love The Walper Hotel
Couples who book The Walper are looking for ease, character, and a boutique hotel experience that doesn’t feel cookie-cutter. It’s especially popular for:
- One-stop wedding days (from getting ready to the dance floor)
- Couples who want indoor photo options year-round
- Guests who will love the walkable downtown location
- Delicious in-house catering with rave reviews
- A venue team that makes you feel completely taken care of
It’s not the right fit if you’re set on a rustic, outdoor, or DIY-heavy celebration, but for couples who love clean, cozy, and classy with a hint of urban edge? It’s perfect.

Lighting Tip:
The Oak Room’s light can be a little tricky for big group photos. I always bring off-camera flash gear to fill in the shadows for even lighting on every member of your wedding crew.

Best Photo Spots at The Walper Hotel
- The Oak Room: Dark wood, soft window light, and a fireplace make this a cozy, editorial-feeling backdrop for couple or group portraits.
- Goudies Lane: Just outside, this mural-filled alleyway is colourful during the day, and oozes romance at night, under string lights.
- Oak Lobby + Lokal Lounge: Ideal for first looks, family photos, a comfy spot to sit between events, and a rockin’ cocktail hour.
- The Crystal Ballroom: Wide, glowing windows bring in tons of light; chandeliers and decorative trim adds a warm softness to this larger space.
This venue is made for stunning wedding portraits, no matter the weather, which makes it an especially smart pick for winter weddings.
How much does a Walper Hotel wedding cost?
A Walper Hotel wedding with 100 guests costs $30,000 on average, including taxes and gratuities. Their most popular package option costs $185/guest, which includes all of the classic event elements: ceremony, cocktail reception, open bar, unlimited wine pour, coursed dinner, late night snack, and of course signature drinks. Cheers! For a 70-person wedding, this would be closer to $23,000.
Getting Ready Tip:
Besides the regular hotel suites, there are two main wedding prep spaces:
- The King Conference Room is bright, spacious, and great for larger groups.
- A smaller lounge behind the Lokal Bar is cozier with much less natural light. Great as a quiet retreat or a spot for storing bags and personal items.
Timeline Tip:
A first look is a smart move here. It allows us to make the most of all the spaces before guests arrive and saves you from sneaking away during cocktail hour. Also, plan a short nighttime portrait session in Goudies Lane after the reception. It’s worth it.

Things to Know Before You Book
- Only one wedding per day – no competing events to worry about.
- Two nearby paid parking garages (free on Sundays)
- Elevators and ramps throughout make it fully accessible.
- Indoor-only for ceremonies and receptions. (Intimate terrace ceremonies may be possible, but they’re not common.)
- Amazing in-house catering. Seriously, the food is always a highlight.
From a Photographer’s Perspective
The Walper is one of those rare venues where everything just flows. As a photographer, I love how smooth it is to move between spaces throughout the day. The setting is elegant but relaxed, and couples often feel instantly grounded once they step inside.
One favorite memory: during Carly & Alex’s wedding, they did their first look in the Oak Lobby. The light was soft, the space was quiet, and you could feel the nerves melt away as they exchanged gifts and soaked in the moment together. It set the tone for the rest of their day in the best way.
Become Part of a Rich Legacy
One of the most unique things about The Walper is its deep historical roots. Built in 1893, the hotel has hosted an incredible list of guests over the years, including nearly every Canadian Prime Minister, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Louis Armstrong, Eleanor Roosevelt, and even Al Capone. There’s a story that Louis Armstrong once played his trumpet from the second-floor balcony to a crowd gathered on King Street.
Every corner of the building holds a bit of that history. You’ll notice vintage details woven into the design, from hidden doors in the Oak Room to the charming architectural features throughout the hotel.
When you choose to get married here, you’re not just booking a banquet hall. You’re choosing to become part of The Walper’s remarkable legacy. Your nervous first look, your tearful vows, your dance floor celebration – long after the music fades, your story will linger in the walls, just like the countless great love stories that came before.
